Missionary Profiles

Hey guys,

Today was beautiful Sunday and man was it HOT!  As most of you know on Sunday mornings we are going through the series called "Missionary Profiles".  It is a study of a famous Christian missionary each week.  Week 1 was "William Carey" who is famous for learning over 30+ languages and many Bible translations.  This week we had a blast talking about Samuel Schereschewsky.  Raised a Jewish Rabbi, he accepted Christ after reading a Hebrew New Testament, and headed to China as a missionary.  His claim to fame is that; after contracting Parkinson's disease and becoming almost completely paralyzed, he finished the last 2000 pages of his Bible translation into a dialect of Chinese with only 1 finger!  To illustrate the complexity of life with only 1 finger I had each student try to eat some pretzels using only 1 finger.  Though most of them accomplished the task, there were pretzels all over and they got the point.  To explain the difficulty of learning even basic Chinese I used my extensive "Chinese 1 from High School" to teach the students a very important phrase.

你是谁?我是一个忍者,准备死亡
Nǐ shì shuí?
Wǒ shì yīgè rěnzhě, zhǔnbèi sǐwáng
Which means: "Who are you?  I am a ninja, prepare to die
We all had a blast attempting to write the Chinese characters and pronounce our new favorite phrase.  I'd say overall, most people did ok but I don't think I'm the best Chinese teacher.  We then covered a brief passage in Hebrews ch. 11 to point out that these "heroes" all have one thing in common: Faith.  Lastly we broke up into small groups and prayed that God would help us to be missionaries to those around us and prayed for specific people that we could share Christ with.  Well I'm off to play some Castle Crashers] with Nichole, love you guys.  For all of you that are off on vacation, we miss you and don't forget about the:
 "Superhero Movie Marathon"
When: Tuesday, August 17th
          12:00pm-8:00pm
Where: At my parents house.
What to bring: $10 for food, Bathing suit

ACC Philippines Mission Trip 2010

Midnight Ultimate Frizbee

Hello Everyone!
To start off the blog I figured I'd start with a quick recap of our last event.  "Midnight Ultimate Frizbee"  Unfortunately due to the type of the event "glow in the dark, at midnight" I don't have any pictures to post but,  the event was a blast.  We had approx 40 people show up for a great game.  As soon as everyone arrived I asked Jeff-O to divide the teams evenly and pass out the glowing wrist bands but, after he made the teams "even" I have to admit, I was doubting my teams ability to have a fighting chance but we ended up doing ok.  Just as we began the game a cool crisp air came off the lake bringing the usual monroe fog, making it ideal conditions for our game.  Most of the game all we could see were blurs of red and blue as we all rushed by each other scrambling for the frizbee.  The game was a blast and remained a tie until the very last play and we all survived with only a couple minor injuries.  Lydia walked away proudly with a trophy of a swollen lip from a frizbee to the face and in a desperate scramble for a floater, Christina and I collided with a mind numbing, audible "Crack" as our shins slammed together.  After a good couple minutes of limping around I think we were both ok, though the tennisball size bruise/bump on my shin might disagree.  Another exciting twist was the unexpected shower we all received when the soccer field's sprinklers turned on for the last hour, most of were soaked by the end.  All in all, it was a huge success and that event continues to be one of my all time favorites every year.  The game ended right at midnight with a stunning, diving catch from Jake right into the end zone and sliding another 10 feet through the mud.  Thanks everyone for coming, I'll see you this tuesday at my moms house for the Superhero Marathon!  8 hours of consecutive Spiderman movies with breaks only for food.  It's from 12:00pm-8:00pm and bring $10.00 for food.  See you there!
